New Articles Citing Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze

In light of the recent combustion engine developments in the European Union, Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze was cited in two interesting articles.

Amongst others Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze points out that it is also important when to look at which CO2 emissions. During production, electric cars have a higher energy demand than combustion engines. During the lifetime, the ratio starts to turn because the combustion engine emits more CO2 than an electric car, provided the electricity is green. If we burn coal for the electricity, we have gained nothing.

Together with Prof. Dr. Stefano Brusoni, Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze recently published an article in Strategic Management Journal about how dynamic capabilities change ordinary capabilities.

Big Welcome to our visiting PhD Maarten Cerpentier from the Ghent University!

Maarten started in the department of Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze in the middle of February. We are very happy to welcome him in our team. As a small introduction, we asked him some questions about his background, research and interests. Read more about his answers below:

carpentier

What are you currently doing at the Professorship of Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze?

With Prof. Dr. Schulze, I am working on several projects related to firms’ innovation commercialization performance. In particular, we examine how countries’ institutional frameworks influence the likelihood that firms can successfully launch and commercialize new products. The institutions that I am interested in the most (and where my research is about) are employment protection laws, and intellectual property protection. Besides that, I also work together with Prof. Dr. Schulze on a project that examines how firms external open innovation search impacts the successful launch and commercialization of new products across the European Union.

What is your academical background?

I obtained my bachelor’s and master’s degrees (both in Business Economics) at Ghent University (Belgium). I graduated in 2017. After working as a Research Associate at the Vlerick Business School, I joined the Centre for Entrepreneurship Research and the Corporate Finance Research Group at Ghent University in April 2019 as a Ph.D. researcher, under the supervision of prof. dr. Tom Vanacker (Ghent University and University of Exeter) and co-supervision of Shaker Zahra (University of Minnesota).

Why did you choose the University of Zurich for your visiting scholar?

I chose the University of Zurich (Department of Business) because of its excellent reputation worldwide, which provides me with an ideal setting to present my work, and discuss my research results and plans with leading academic scholars. Moreover, the city of Zurich is a great place to visit for a couple of months, and trips to the surrounding Alps provide great opportunities to recharge batteries in the weekend!

New Article on 20 Minuten

This week, 20 Minuten published an article about rising car prices due to shortage of raw materials. Prof. Dr. Anja Schulze was cited as an expert for the automotive market and Director of the Swiss Center for Automotive Research.

The key takeaways from the article were the following:

  • Raw materials such as nickel, lithium, palladium and neon are in short supply because of the Ukraine war.
  • This has consequences for car buyers: They now have to wait longer for their new cars.
  • Car prices are also likely to rise further due to the shortage of raw materials.
  • Car manufacturers could now switch to alternative materials

Webinar – From Product to Platform: Transformation in the Global Automative Industry

On January 27th, Anja Schulze was a selected speaker at the Webinar by the Georgia State University. With a panel of global experts from both industry and academia, this webinar explored the types of product possibilities that are emerging in the automotive industry, the nature of the companies that will compete in this emerging space, and the implications for associated industries and supply chains.

Considered questions include:

  1. Will regions of the world adopt similar technologies? That is, will there be standardization of protocols and service products across geographic markets?
  2. What are the implications for emerging markets versus developed markets?
  3. What types of products can we expect to see in the near term and farther into the future?

The Webinar can be rewatched here.
