Competitive workplaces don’t work for gender equality

The article from Japan Today discusses how highly competitive workplaces can exacerbate gender inequality. It is based on a study by economists who argue that such environments are less conducive to women, mainly because these settings often require long work hours that conflict with unpaid caregiving roles typically held by women. The study uses experiments to demonstrate that when high-stakes bonuses are introduced, gender disparities in effort, output, and pay become evident. The article suggests that non-competitive incentives might be a better alternative for creating equitable workplaces.
