Katherine Rother Awarded EMAC–Sheth Sustainability Prize
We are pleased to announce that PhD student Katherine Rother from the Chair of Marketing for Social Impact at the University of Zurich has been awarded one of the prestigious EMAC Sheth Foundation Sustainability Research Competition prizes. Her proposal, titled “The Hidden Costs of Social Media Advertising: Backfire effects on product returns and environmental impact in e commerce.”, was honoured at the EMAC conference in Madrid in May 2025.
The EMAC Sheth Foundation Sustainability Research Competition, supported by the Sheth Foundation, invites proposals that address sustainability-related topics with a clear marketing focus. This includes themes such as responsible consumption and production, environmental issues, equality, and wellbeing. Two awards of 5,000 EUR each are granted annually. Katherine was recognized for her outstanding research at the intersection of digital marketing and sustainable consumer behavior.
Katherine Rother is a research associate at the Chair of Marketing for Social Impact. She holds a BA in Anthropology and French & Francophone Studies from UCLA and an MSc from the University of Oxford, where she explored collaborative strategies in online language learning. Her current research focuses on sustainable consumer behavior, decision-making, and communication strategies, especially in digital environments. She is passionate about how consumers can be encouraged to make more sustainable choices and the values that drive these decisions.
