January 25th, 2023: Goodbye Christoph

Today was Christoph Brielmaier’s last day at our office. For the past four months, Christoph, originally from the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, has visited our Chair as researcher in residence.

Dear Christoph, thank you for your visit! It was a great pleasure having you here and we look forward to continuing working with you and seeing you again in person for our OpenStrategy Workshop in June. Meanwhile we wish you all the best for your exciting research projects!

January 23rd, 2024: Winter Magic Mountain Offsite

Last weekend, we held our cherished annual Winter Magic Mountain offsite, this year set against the picturesque backdrop of Meiringen.

Throughout the offsite, we blended interactive workshops and social activities. In the mornings and evenings we dedicated time to reflect on our recent and future teaching activities or finalized the Chair’s vision and mission for 2033. We further engaged in enriching dialogues about inviting future guest speakers, and organized our community engagement. Additionally, we delved into proactive discussions for example about opportunities and challenges in research and teaching, with a keen focus on AI.

During the day we had a lot of fun and created unforgettable memories, whether skiing down the slopes, hiking through breathtaking landscapes, sharing meals on the mountainside, or cooking and enjoying self-made pasta during cozy evenings with the Extended Chair Family.

It was a very enjoyable, productive and fun weekend. Eagerly anticipating, we already look forward to reconvening for our next Magic Mountain in the summer.

January 18th, 2024: Time to celebrate!

What an eventful day at the office yesterday! Not only did we successfully conduct our Change Management exam, but we also had the pleasure of welcoming back our esteemed former chair member, Shenghui Ma for a visit. The day continued with a meeting with the Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. team, giving us great insight into their recent Open Strategy project. Additionally, we seized the opportunity to re-celebrate David's birthday, spreading extra cheer. Ultimately, we finalized our arrangements for our Magic Mountain offsite in Meiringen starting this afternoon.

Here's to many more days filled with learning, celebration, and team spirit!

Last Saturday, Theresa Langenmayr, Renate Kratochvil, and Jeanine Porck organized an exciting workshop at The Strategic Management Society Conference in Toronto, Canada.

Ann Langley, Melissa Graebner, Becky Reuber, Laura Doering and Christine Shropshire provided insights into how to connect macro phenomena to micro strategizing along a qualitative research study: the implications of selecting a historical or real time, single or multiple case, possible data sources, and different approaches to analyzing and theorizing from your data.

September 28th, 2023: Distinguished Scholar PhD Seminar

It was a pleasure to welcome Prof. Tammar B. Zilber from the The Hebrew University Business School, Israel, as lecturer in our Distinguished Scholar PhD Seminar series here at University of Zurich.

During the three-day seminar Tammar shared invaluable insights into the process of theorizing and writing qualitative work from both an author's and a reviewer's perspective. She meticulously outlined the journey from field materials to making a substantial theoretical contribution. During the seminar, Tammar emphasized the significance of engaging oneself in the theoretical conversation and provided recommendations on accomplishing the "Conceptual Leap". She further underscored the pivotal role of writing as a method of inquiry, with the publishing process serving as an essential conduit for surfacing new insights and introducing previously unconsidered perspectives.

Especially the lively discussions and the hands-on work on our individual paper projects added a unique and significant dimension to the seminar.

We thank Tammar for the great time here in Zurich and hope to welcome her back very soon.

From Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th of July, David Seidl, Violetta Splitter, and Robin Engelbach attended and contributed to the EGOS (European Group for Organizational Studies) Colloquium 2023 in Cagliari, Italy.

On Wednesday, Robin convened the Strategy-as-Practice Community Day with the theme "In Search of a Good Life: Strategizing Between Vision and Tradition," which included a panel discussion, presentations of special issues and a community project, as well as roundtables. Many thanks to David and Violetta, who each hosted a roundtable and facilitated the interactive community project session.

June 7th, 2023, Open Strategy Exchange

Today we had the great pleasure to host an exchange on the topic of Open Strategy between the chairs of Julia Hautz, Leonhard Dobusch (both from Leopold-Franzens Universität Innsbruck), and Martin Friesl (from Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg) here at the University of Zurich.

We kicked off the exchange with lunch at the cafeteria with the opportunity to catch up on the latest news. The event's program was based on several short presentations by all the participants on their current Open Strategy projects. In active feedback and discussion sessions, each participant was then able to get inspiring input from the others on his or her data collection or paper project.

It was great to see that there are so many interesting papers to come and that some new opportunities for collaboration have emerged from this exchange.

We would like to thank Julia Hautz, Kristina Stoiber, Thomas Ortner, Christoph Brielmaier, and Milena Leybold once again for coming to Zurich, sharing their latest insights, and for their inspiring input on our research. We look forward to our next exchange, presumably in Innsbruck, and wish all participants the best for their projects.

May 22nd-26th, 2023, Distinguished Scholar Seminar with Martha Feldman

It was a pleasure to welcome Prof. Martha Feldman from the University of California, Irvine - The Paul Merage School of Business again as a lecturer in our Distinguished Scholar Seminar Series here at University of Zurich.

During the three-day seminar, Martha provided the international PhD and post-doctoral students with valuable insights into the theories of power and empowerment. We started with theories that are relatively static and moved to theories that are more dynamic and relational. Throughout the course, we reflected on the difference between thinking about power as cause and power as consequence and the relationship between these two ways of thinking about power.

We would like to thank you, Martha, for the great time here in Zurich. It is always a great pleasure to welcome you at our chair and to engage in deep and insightful discussions. As a figurehead of the practice-shift in strategy research, we are honored to have the opportunity to learn from your profound insights and knowledge. We would be very happy to see you again soon in Zurich, Irvine or at one of the SAP-track's international conferences and meetings.

April 14th, 2023, Exchange with Jochen Koch's Chair of Management and Organization

The last two days we had a very interesting and exciting academic and personal exchange in Zurich with Jochen Koch's Chair of Management and Organization at the Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder).

On Thursday we met in the Mensa of the University of Zurich and got to know each other over lunch. This was followed by paper presentations and discussion sessions on the urgency of acting on grand challenges, diversity and inclusion in Open Strategy, and multimodal communication processes. These inspiring and productive sessions were combined with short breaks to allow for further discussion. The day ended with a joint dinner at the Kunsthaus Zürich.

Today, we continued with more paper presentation and discussion sessions on interactions and strategic issues, microfoundations of knowledge integration, and creativity in effectual processes. Over lunch, we reflected on the ideas and outcomes of the exchange and outlined further avenues for exchange and collaboration.

We would like to thank Jochen Koch, Lorenzo Skade, Elisa Lehrer, and Paul Vetter once again for coming to Zurich, sharing their latest insights, and for their inspiring input on our research. We look forward to another exchange and wish them all the best for their papers.
