1 Topics

This seminar deals with selected topics relating to innovation. First, we analyze the relation between competition and innovation. Second, we focus on the role of labor mobility in spillovers for innovative activity. Third, we deal with the organization of research. Finally, we analyze new product launches.

2 Target Group

This seminar targets students from economics, business administration, and management and economics. Students of Economics, Business Administration and Management and Economics can use the credit points for the course as follows:

∙ MA: Wahlpflichtbereich VWL II

∙ MA: Seminare Management and Economics

∙ MA: Wahlpflichtbereich BWL 5

In addition, the credits are valid for the "Wahlbereich Ökonomie".

3 Application

There will be no formal application procedure, but please indicate your willingness to participate by September 17 2010: Mail to entrepreneurship@isu.uzh.ch.

4 Program

∙ Introductory reading and exam: Participants are required to do a considerable amount of introductory reading. The obligatory literature is referenced in Section (tba). The obligatory reading list will be the subject of a written exam taking place on October 4.

∙ Presentation: Each group of students will also present one paper and provide a summary of around 5 pages. The paper should be provided three days before the presentation. Also, for each student in the class, a handout - a copy of the slides - should be provided at the day of the presentation. The Topics for the presentations will be determined in the introductory sessions on September 20 and September 27.

∙ Credit Points: The seminar is worth 6 credits. To obtain the credit points, the following requirements have to be fulfilled (there were typos in the previous version, this is the correct one as of Sept. 29, 2010):

1.Exam on October 4 (20%)

2.Presentation and Handout (50%)

3.Summary (20%)

4.Active participation during the seminar (10%).

6 Literature

Chapters 6 and 7 from the Paper of Prof. Schmutzler are also relevant for the exam.
