Piera Waibel recently held two guest lectures for master students at the University of Applied Sciences in Business Administration Zurich (Prof. Dr. Sybille Sachs) and at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (Prof. Dr. Claus-Heinrich Daub), introducing the students to the world of Inclusive Business and Base of the Pyramid. In a group exercise, the participants could explore their own inclusive business strategy, and came up with innovative ideas in the areas of education (e.g. a saving/loan scheme for primary schools to foster enrollment and attendance), consumer goods (e.g. a heat resistant, locally produced and fortified chocolate bar for Western Africa), technical innovation (e.g. a multifunctional bamboo based buggy through local rent system in Thailand), and health (e.g. mobile medication system attached to people selling mobile minutes in Peru – see picture). The vast area of ideas the students developed in only 30 minutes shows, that there is still a lot more potential for inclusive business development in companies!

Alex Bitektine and Patrick Haack, symposium proposal on “Experiments in Institutional Theory” accepted at the Academy of Management Annual Conference in Boston, August 3-7, 2012. The papers assembled in this symposium seek to showcase the potential of experimental research methods in institutional theory and demonstrate different ways in which experimental designs can inform research on legitimacy, conformance, diffusion of structures and practices and on other institutional concepts. The goal of this symposium thus is to help build the case for experimental methods in institutional research. Specifically, we seek (1) to facilitate a conversation on the role of experiments in the development and testing of prevalent constructs in institutional theory, (2) to encourage scholars to utilize mixed-method designs, which allow triangulation of results from “conventional” methods with experimental exploration of causal mechanisms and micro-institutional insights, and (3) to create a community of institutional analysts that pursue or intend to pursue experiments in their research.
