“Simply pushing harder within the old boundaries will not do.” (Karl Weick) |
The Chair of Organization & Management is part of the Department of Business Administration at the University of Zurich. In our research and teaching we are concerned with different aspects of organization and management, which we examine using different theoretical and methodological approaches. More specifically, in our research we address questions concerning the practice of strategy, top management team dynamics, routine dynamics, organizational spaces and the relation between management research and practice. In our teaching we cover a wide range of topics such as organization theory, organization design, change management and strategy as practice. We are fully committed to excellence and responsibility across the entire range of our activities. |
Today was Christoph Brielmaier’s last day at our office. For the past four months, Christoph, originally from the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, has visited our Chair as researcher in residence.
Dear Christoph, thank you for your visit! It was a great pleasure having you here and we look forward to continuing working with you and seeing you again in person for our OpenStrategy Workshop in June. Meanwhile we wish you all the best for your exciting research projects!
Last weekend, we held our cherished annual Winter Magic Mountain offsite, this year set against the picturesque backdrop of Meiringen.
Throughout the offsite, we blended interactive workshops and social activities. In the mornings and evenings we dedicated time to reflect on our recent and future teaching activities or finalized the Chair’s vision and mission for 2033. We further engaged in enriching dialogues about inviting future guest speakers, and organized our community engagement. Additionally, we delved into proactive discussions for example about opportunities and challenges in research and teaching, with a keen focus on AI.
During the day we had a lot of fun and created unforgettable memories, whether skiing down the slopes, hiking through breathtaking landscapes, sharing meals on the mountainside, or cooking and enjoying self-made pasta during cozy evenings with the Extended Chair Family.
It was a very enjoyable, productive and fun weekend. Eagerly anticipating, we already look forward to reconvening for our next Magic Mountain in the summer.
What an eventful day at the office yesterday! Not only did we successfully conduct our Change Management exam, but we also had the pleasure of welcoming back our esteemed former chair member, Shenghui Ma for a visit. The day continued with a meeting with the Wikimedia Deutschland e. V. team, giving us great insight into their recent Open Strategy project. Additionally, we seized the opportunity to re-celebrate David's birthday, spreading extra cheer. Ultimately, we finalized our arrangements for our Magic Mountain offsite in Meiringen starting this afternoon.
Here's to many more days filled with learning, celebration, and team spirit!
As the year draws to a close, we would like to thank Tania Räcker for her three-year term as Membership Chair of the Strategizing Activities and Practices (SAP) Interest Group at the Academy of Management.
During her term, and together with the hard-working Membership Committee, Tania was able to:
- Enhance SAP conference engagement
- Expand year-round member engagement
- Strengthen inclusion and diversity in the IG
- Increase IG visibility
- Foster the SAP brand
We are grateful and proud that Tania represented our team in this role at the vibrant SAP@AOM community and are excited that Benjamin Grossmann-Hensel now continues as Chair representative in his role as new SAP Secretary.
The Chair of Organization and Management wishes you a peaceful holiday season and a happy, prosperous New Year!
Today we held our final lecture in Change Management and have thus concluded the lecture period for this semester.
The festive season gives us now the chance to look back on a year with numerous highlights - the last of which were gatherings within our team and with our colleagues of the faculty to celebrate and exchange on the successful year. We would like to thank everyone with whom we have been in contact and who helped us to jointly shape the year 2023.
We are very much looking forward to our new teaching portfolio and new forms of academic exchange in 2024!

We congratulate and thank them for their efforts and for enriching the Strategy as Practice community.
We are very proud to announce that our colleague Violetta Splitterreceived a call from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford.

Starting in March, Violetta will embark on a new journey as Fellow of St Peter's College, University of Oxford and Associate Professor for Strategy at Saïd Business School.
We are immensely proud of Violetta and extend our best wishes for this new chapter in her academic career. However, her presence will be greatly missed here in Zurich. Welcomed by the autumn sun, our new researcher in residence arrived this week: Christoph Brielmaier from the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg, Germany, will be staying with us at the University of Zurichfor the next four months. Christoph is a doctoral student at Prof. Dr. Martin Friesl’s Chair of Strategy and Organization at the University of Bamberg.
Christoph's research interests, which revolve around Open Strategy, the attention-based view and new roles in new forms of organizing, are very well aligned with ours. Given these shared interests, we hope that Christoph will have a particularly inspiring and productive time at our chair. It is a pleasure to have you here, Christoph!
Congratulations to Kristina Komardina for winning the University of Zurich spring term 2023 semester award with her outstanding master's thesis: «Creativity in Open Strategy»
The thesis was supervised by Theresa Langenmayr and Kristina was specially nominated by David Seidl for her very good academic contribution. The award was presented to her a few days ago by the rector of the university.
Last Saturday, Theresa Langenmayr, Renate Kratochvil, and Jeanine Porck organized an exciting workshop at The Strategic Management Society Conference in Toronto, Canada.
Ann Langley, Melissa Graebner, Becky Reuber, Laura Doering and Christine Shropshire provided insights into how to connect macro phenomena to micro strategizing along a qualitative research study: the implications of selecting a historical or real time, single or multiple case, possible data sources, and different approaches to analyzing and theorizing from your data.
It was a pleasure to welcome Prof. Tammar B. Zilber from the The Hebrew University Business School, Israel, as lecturer in our Distinguished Scholar PhD Seminar series here at University of Zurich.
During the three-day seminar Tammar shared invaluable insights into the process of theorizing and writing qualitative work from both an author's and a reviewer's perspective. She meticulously outlined the journey from field materials to making a substantial theoretical contribution. During the seminar, Tammar emphasized the significance of engaging oneself in the theoretical conversation and provided recommendations on accomplishing the "Conceptual Leap". She further underscored the pivotal role of writing as a method of inquiry, with the publishing process serving as an essential conduit for surfacing new insights and introducing previously unconsidered perspectives.
Especially the lively discussions and the hands-on work on our individual paper projects added a unique and significant dimension to the seminar.
We thank Tammar for the great time here in Zurich and hope to welcome her back very soon.
We were thrilled to kick off the new semester with a series of engaging lectures on strategy as practice, change management, & organizational consulting this week! It’s wonderful to see both new and familiar faces. Enjoy a glimpse of this week through this initial capture.
Last week, just before the start of the new term, our new researcher in residence arrived: Yalan Yang from Fudan University, China.
She will be staying at our chair at the University of Zurich for the next twelve months. Yalan is a doctoral student at the School of Management at Fudan University. Her research interests revolve around founder identity and strategic change in new ventures.
It is a pleasure to have Yalan here, and we wish her an inspiring and productive time at our chair!

Today we had the great pleasure to host an exchange on the topic of Open Strategy between the chairs of Julia Hautz, Leonhard Dobusch (both from Leopold-Franzens Universität Innsbruck), and Martin Friesl (from Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg) here at the University of Zurich.
We kicked off the exchange with lunch at the cafeteria with the opportunity to catch up on the latest news. The event's program was based on several short presentations by all the participants on their current Open Strategy projects. In active feedback and discussion sessions, each participant was then able to get inspiring input from the others on his or her data collection or paper project.
It was great to see that there are so many interesting papers to come and that some new opportunities for collaboration have emerged from this exchange.
We would like to thank Julia Hautz, Kristina Stoiber, Thomas Ortner, Christoph Brielmaier, and Milena Leybold once again for coming to Zurich, sharing their latest insights, and for their inspiring input on our research. We look forward to our next exchange, presumably in Innsbruck, and wish all participants the best for their projects.
It was a pleasure to welcome Prof. Martha Feldman from the University of California, Irvine - The Paul Merage School of Business again as a lecturer in our Distinguished Scholar Seminar Series here at University of Zurich.
During the three-day seminar, Martha provided the international PhD and post-doctoral students with valuable insights into the theories of power and empowerment. We started with theories that are relatively static and moved to theories that are more dynamic and relational. Throughout the course, we reflected on the difference between thinking about power as cause and power as consequence and the relationship between these two ways of thinking about power.
We would like to thank you, Martha, for the great time here in Zurich. It is always a great pleasure to welcome you at our chair and to engage in deep and insightful discussions. As a figurehead of the practice-shift in strategy research, we are honored to have the opportunity to learn from your profound insights and knowledge. We would be very happy to see you again soon in Zurich, Irvine or at one of the SAP-track's international conferences and meetings.
The last two days we had a very interesting and exciting academic and personal exchange in Zurich with Jochen Koch's Chair of Management and Organization at the Europa-Universität Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder).
On Thursday we met in the Mensa of the University of Zurich and got to know each other over lunch. This was followed by paper presentations and discussion sessions on the urgency of acting on grand challenges, diversity and inclusion in Open Strategy, and multimodal communication processes. These inspiring and productive sessions were combined with short breaks to allow for further discussion. The day ended with a joint dinner at the Kunsthaus Zürich.
Today, we continued with more paper presentation and discussion sessions on interactions and strategic issues, microfoundations of knowledge integration, and creativity in effectual processes. Over lunch, we reflected on the ideas and outcomes of the exchange and outlined further avenues for exchange and collaboration.
We would like to thank Jochen Koch, Lorenzo Skade, Elisa Lehrer, and Paul Vetter once again for coming to Zurich, sharing their latest insights, and for their inspiring input on our research. We look forward to another exchange and wish them all the best for their papers.
After a long Covid break our new researcher in residence has arrived: Peter Smith from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, will be staying with us at the Chair of Organization and Management for the next three months. Peter is a lecturer and researcher in the University of Auckland’s Department of Management and International Business. His research interests are based on the practice of strategy; specifically, he is interested in how an individual’s practice of management and strategy, in an organization, makes a difference to the firm’s strategy. It is a pleasure to have Peter here, and we wish him an inspiring and productive time at our chair!
Welcome back from your holidays to FS23! We hope you all had a great start to the new year. We are looking forward to a fresh start on campus and to seeing many of you in our seminar Qualitative Forschungsmethoden and our lectures BWL II and Organisation und Führung (undergraduate level) as well as in Organization Theories (master level). If you are interested in writing your thesis at our chair, please register for the information event on March 24th, 2023 (14-15h) by sending an email to Kalliopi Vagias.
